MuseScore makes rehearsing music fun and more productive once the basics of the program are learned.
  • A HUGE Step Backwards...

TL;DR it is completely unfair to charge $50/yr ($64 if paying monthly) for the core functionality of this app (mobile mscz player). Also this “new” version is horribly unstable and now REQUIRES integration with musescore.com—which is a HUGE turn-off for composers who use musescore as a means of composing but don’t want all of their work on the internet. ——————————— I’ve been following musescore for a fairly long time (all the way back since musescore 0.9.6.2) and the development of musescore historically has been nothing short of a godsend. It really breaks my heart to see such a step backwards. Here’s the thing: The musescore songbook app was developed with one express purpose in mind: the app was a mobile MSCZ player. Simple—plug in an mscz and the app would play it back. Imported mscz files were saved into a songbook so they could be accessed anytime without an internet connection. It was literally the perfect companion app to musescore—and very accessible. While the app provided the option to search for msczs from the musescore.com community, users weren’t tied down to the musescore online platform. It was simple, stable and very useful: if it was made in musescore, the app could play it. With this update, the developers now REQUIRE a musescore.com account to use the app. I guess, in hindsight, this can be forgiven because musescore.com accounts are free, but what simply cannot be forgiven is that with this update the core functionality of this app (songbook mscz player) has been turned into a pro feature for musescore.com users, which costs no less than $49.99 a year. For an app with such a limited feature set this is just WAY too much to ask for. I don’t care if I get all of the pro features of musescore.com—I’m not looking for a musescore.com membership! When I downloaded this app, it was because I wanted a mobile mscz player—and I was plenty happy paying the $6 or so to have it! Without the pro membership, the ONLY thing this app can do is view your musescore.com content and stream (but not store) content from the musescore.com community—all of which I can do anyway in literally any mobile browser! (Without all of the bugs, too!) I am a music student that loves composing. I use musescore (desktop app) to work on compositions and then I use Dropbox to import the files to songbook to play them from my phone for my friends to get their feedback or to quick reflect on the current state of a composition away from the computer. Because I paid for the app before this update, I can thankfully still do that, but that is a poor excuse for robbing every new up and coming user of that functionality! And all of the new bells and whistles of the revised app UI (when it decides to work, that is) and the musescore pro membership just can’t make that right. Look musescore, I love what you do, but this is just a disappointing step backwards. You are seriously limiting the accessibility of this app both by tying the app to musescore.com accounts, and especially by putting the CORE FUNCTION of the app behind a ridiculously high pay wall. You want to add musescore.com integration? Fine—but make it optional! If you don’t need an account to download musescore, you shouldn’t need one to play mscz files. You want to charge for the function of the app? Fine—but make it a ONE TIME purchase for a REASONABLE amount please! I’d be more than happy to pay $5-$7 to support musescore! But for the love of all things sensible, don’t require musescore pro for the CORE FUNCTION of this app!
  • What a Joke

This is frankly the worst app update I’ve ever seen. You took a $2 app and changed the price to $50 a year without adding any functionality... ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? $50 a year and you can’t edit Scores??? $50 a year with much less functionality than the free desktop version? $50 a year and the scores look worse and sound worse than the free desktop version? Are you insane!? I love the desktop version of MuseScore but the iOS app is trash and the price is ridiculous. I’m absolutely disgusted by the new insane pricing model but I’m guessing that it will change soon since no one in their right mind would pay $50 a year just to play MuseScore files......

I use this app to practice and so I need looping. It was not very intuitive in the previous version. Now it is amazingly frustrating. “If you need to edit the loop, please repeat these steps again.” It drives me crazy. Most software goes the path of greedy: we will ask you to pay money instead of making it better. Sadly, it looks that this app started its climb down.

The app has lost features that I used. The functions that are there don’t work correctly most of the time. I have contacted the company and have not received satisfactory answers. I paid for Pro so I would have access to advanced features on the app which allowed me to transpose the music and export PDFs of the music transposed and by single part if needed. I can no longer do that. The company has stated they are considering restoring those features, however, I can no longer use the app as I intended to. As the app is no longer of use to me, I stated I would pay for the months that I used, and requested a refund for the balance of that year. They have refused to refund my money or any portion of my purchase. They told me that I need to use a PC instead. That is not why purchased Pro which include the app. I would like to use the app the way it functioned in the past, if it does that in the near future I may change my rating, but for now serious disappointment in the app and the company’s response.

I appreciate not forcing me to get a subscription after using the app for free for years. A genuine thank you is in order.

  • Terrible Update

I loved this app, until the new update ruined it. Can’t listen to my downloaded music, the titles of my downloaded music don’t even show properly (just random numbers), etc. I don’t plan on using this app again until it is fixed.

Everything that could have gone wrong with this update did. It’s so glitchy and a lot of the time, is not going to work. I understand that they are working to fix bugs as they come but even the things that are already fixed are bad. The sound of the trumpet in this app is horrible. I’ve noticed that recently, although it reads that it is Bb trumpet, it is most definitely not Bb trumpet. I would use a different program if people actually posted on those. Please fix these issues. God speed. Jimmy-johns fast.
