  • Ok. Not as good as I hoped.

It's not the print OED. It doesn't have the old English words and I have done word searches with "no results" but Google or another app does. It's just normal. I'm not going to return it, but you can get as much from a cheaper app.

    Great, comprehensive, easy to use.
  • An indispensable resource for English users

    By 32567
This is an amazing resource that covers a wide range of English lexicon over centuries, providing helpful and accurate definitions, time(s) of usage, origins and roots of words, among other important features. I strongly recommend it. The user-friendly app is the icing on the cake.

I'll change my rating if you get rid of the obnoxious prompts to rate the app.
  • Shorter OED: Really Good!

01/05/2018 addendum: a year ago, I purchased an "online" version of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary from another developer: that one has a really slow search. THIS app by Mobisystems is completely on your phone (90Mb?) and no internet connection is required, it is periodically updated, and searches like a champ, even with an approximate spelling. This is called the "Shorter Oxford English Dictionary", because the big OED is gigantic (I think the print books extend to over 3-4 feet on a bookshelf), and includes cool English Major stuff, but is almost useless to us mortals. The Oxford publishers are very understated, and while this is the "Shorter"edition, it is the full unabridged dictionary, with word origins and examples of usage in various ways. What it doesn't have is quotes of every usage of every word going back to Middle English, which is the bulk of the "Big" OED. This version is very stable & useful for real people. I had both this and the Webster's Third New International (unabridged), and I like this a little better (and now, the Webster's is no longer supported). For clarity of definitions, I think this and the M-W Unabridged are both much better than the American Heritage Unabridged, which I also purchased at full price. This is the best.

    An incomparable resource!
  • great content, weak and annoying app

    By Prof. Shorthair
The Shorter Oxford Dictionary is wonderful (particularly great feature: indicating in what part of what century particular senses of words first appear) but this app is clunky and limited in function. About the best one can say about it is that it seems to be fairly stable. Infuriatingly, it constantly intrudes with prompts for a 5-star review, a "feature" that can't be turned off. Here's your review; I hope you like it.
  • Not quite as full as I thought

    By Captain Planet XCIV
I’ve had this app for quite some time and have used it mainly for clarity in my academic writings, however, I do notice that almost the lot of words I search tend to end up in their definitions also. This poses a problem on the occasion I want to search a word that I haven’t heard. I have a hard time believing anything that bears the Oxford name would have any shortage of depth. With that said the definitions that I do find of use are magnificent.
  • Oxford Shorter English Dictionary is Great!

Oxford Shorter English Dictionary is extensive and even entertaining. You can learn what Harry Potter’s Dumbledore name means (look up ”dumble”).
