  • Exactly What I Hoped It Would Be

    I’m relatively new to meditating. On and off for the last couple of years and the main struggle I found was not being able to find an actual course, but only smatterings of seemingly disjointed and random guided meditations. I ended up using the same one over and over until my familiarity with what was coming next because a distraction (yes, that could be it’s own object of mindfulness). I like 10% Happier but when I sit down to meditate daily in the mornings, I don’t think about what type I want. I love that the Waking Up course gives me a set of daily meditations that are given in order, and without prior knowledge of their focus. I’m on Day 28, and appreciate their variety, but also their commonality, that many are a series of increasingly specific but also generic meditations. It gives me what I was getting before using the same one every day, but with tweaked format every time so I never fall into becoming too familiar, while maintaining the reliability of a steady practice. My only critique so far is a silly and ultimately superfluous technical one, which is that the “days meditated” counter doesn’t work. They could just as easily do away with that entirely instead of fixing it and I wouldn’t miss it. Though I am encouraged by the “minutes meditated” tracker. Keep up the great work, Sam! Please don’t turn to evil one day because you are far too convincing and calming of a guide.

    I have previously attempted meditating but quickly became distracted by life and abandoned the practice. With the launching of the Waking Up app I became motivated to give it another go. So far, I have been keeping with a nearly daily practice and all the credit can go to Sam Harris and this exceptional app. Both the guided meditation and lessons are full of profound insight, secular spirituality, and deep humanity.
